Cetacean Labs today announced that CEO Chris McGrath has been appointed to the Agentics Foundation management team. He will contribute to developing global standards and best practices for human-centered agentic AI systems.
Leadership Appointments
The Agentics Foundation is a collaborative initiative bringing together industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers to establish frameworks for responsible development and deployment of agentic AI systems. As agentic AI rapidly evolves from experimental technology to production deployment, the Foundation's work becomes increasingly critical for ensuring these systems serve human interests while maintaining safety, transparency, and accountability.
"Joining the Agentics Foundation management team is both an honor and a responsibility," said Chris McGrath, Founder and CEO of Cetacean Labs. "As we build infrastructure for the autonomous economy, we must ensure these systems are designed with human values at their core. The Foundation provides the collaborative environment needed to develop standards that will guide our industry for decades to come."
Bringing Real-World Expertise
Cetacean Labs brings unique practical experience to the Foundation through its deployment of 35+ autonomous AI agents in production environments. This hands-on experience with agentic systems at scale provides invaluable insights into the challenges and opportunities of autonomous AI deployment.
"Standards can't be developed in a vacuum," said McGrath. "They need to be informed by real-world deployment experience. Through our work at Cetacean, we've encountered the practical challenges of deploying autonomous systems at enterprise scale. This experience will help the Foundation develop standards that are both ambitious and pragmatic."
Key Focus Areas
Transparency & Explainability
Developing frameworks for making agentic AI decision-making processes transparent and understandable to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. This includes standards for logging, auditing, and explaining agent actions across complex multi-agent systems.
Safety & Reliability
Establishing best practices for ensuring agentic systems operate reliably under diverse conditions, including graceful degradation, error handling, and fail-safe mechanisms. Particular focus on multi-agent coordination scenarios where emergent behaviors may arise.
Human-AI Collaboration
Creating frameworks that optimize collaboration between human decision-makers and autonomous agents. This includes defining clear boundaries, escalation protocols, and interfaces that preserve human agency while leveraging AI capabilities.
Accountability & Governance
Developing models for organizational governance of agentic AI systems, including accountability structures, oversight mechanisms, and compliance frameworks that work across different regulatory environments.
Industry Timing
The appointment comes at a pivotal moment for agentic AI. Enterprise adoption is accelerating rapidly, with organizations deploying autonomous agents for everything from customer service to complex business process automation. However, the lack of industry-wide standards creates risks around interoperability, safety, and ethical deployment.
"We're at an inflection point," said McGrath. "The next 24-36 months will determine whether agentic AI develops in a fragmented, proprietary manner or evolves with shared standards that benefit the entire ecosystem. The Foundation's work will be crucial in shaping that outcome."
Collaborative Approach
The Agentics Foundation operates as a neutral convening body, bringing together diverse perspectives from academia, industry, civil society, and government. This collaborative model ensures standards reflect broad stakeholder input rather than narrow commercial interests.
Cetacean Labs joins other leading organizations committed to responsible agentic AI development. The Foundation's work complements regulatory efforts while moving at the speed necessary to keep pace with rapid technological advancement.
Open Standards
All standards, frameworks, and best practices developed by the Foundation will be published openly and made available to the broader community. This open approach accelerates adoption while ensuring that organizations of all sizes can benefit from the Foundation's work.
"Standards only work if they're widely adopted," said McGrath. "By keeping our work open and accessible, we maximize the Foundation's impact on the industry while encouraging participation from organizations that might otherwise be excluded from standards development."
Looking Forward
Over the coming year, the Foundation will publish initial frameworks on agent transparency, safety protocols, and human-AI collaboration patterns. These frameworks will be developed through working groups combining theoretical research with practical deployment experience.
Cetacean Labs will contribute both intellectual leadership and real-world case studies from its deployments. The company's work building infrastructure for the autonomous economy provides a natural laboratory for testing and refining standards under production conditions.
